The word serenity popped into my mind during a recent morning meditation. It's that time of year when it gets busy at work as well as socially as we head towards the festive period. And school is always busy right? During school and all the host of after school and weekend activities and parties.
I'm thankful for being able to share a space with parents and children during our yoga class to find focus and peace and to escape the fast paced external environment. I'm also grateful to my yoga teacher Anjna from Yoga for Serenity, her classes keep me balanced and serene too.
As part of my children’s yoga class we always experience a beautiful relaxation to help us all slow down, to breathe more deeply and to let go of any thoughts and feelings and just be still. What does relaxation involve in my class?
Close your eyes and picture this.
The lights are dimmed, soft music is playing and we are all either sitting down, or lying down, whichever is more comfortable. Parents and children may indeed choose to cuddle up close to each other. You’ll hold hands, leaving one hand free to rest on your chest as we take long, deep and slow breaths in and out. Close your eyes now and give it a try if you wish – it feels so good.
We will do a body awareness / visualisation exercise. We’ll tighten and relax our muscles to help release any tension – children particularly love it when I ask them to tighten their faces into a funny one :) We’ll breathe into all the parts of our bodies, from our feet all the way up to our heads and send them love for all that they do for us.
It can be challenging for both adults and children to stay still – I know I have a good wriggle during relaxation when I go to my teacher’s class, but that’s OK, let the wriggles pass and surrender to the calm, quiet energy we’re creating together as a class and just breathe.
Does that sound like your thing? Please do get in touch if so, I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. Or if you are interested in attending one my last classes for this year, details are below.
With love xo
